Message from the Department

As inspired by the Confucian quote “Learning without thought is labour lost; thought without learning is perilous” (The Analects), we aspire to nurture our students to develop the following core attributes for their academic, career and other personal pursuits:

• Integrity - the practice of honesty and consistent adherence to moral principles
• Intellect - the ability to think, comprehend and master abstract and complicated ideas
• Innovativeness - the development of newness, creativity and imagination

The Department of Economics was founded in 1977. Our first undergraduate programme, the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Economics, was accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) in 2004, and was further developed as the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Economics and Finance in 2009. Our Department was also renamed as the Department of Economics and Finance. We launched the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Financial Technology Programme in 2020 to meet the emerging manpower and expertise needs of the growing finance industry in Hong Kong. We aim to nurture young professionals, with solid economic and finance concepts and analytical and decision-making skills as well as practical knowledge and hands-on exposures, to join the banking and finance industries.

We currently offer two undergraduate and two research postgraduate programmes:
1. Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Economics and Finance

We look forward to seeing you in one of our programmes and walking with you through this fruitful study experience of yours here!
